Brandi Carlile with the Seattle Symphony

Now that the CD is finally out, I can post one from the show. This is one of the shots that didn’t end up getting used in the CD jacket, but it’s one of my favorites. To see more, you’ll have to pick up the CD or the vinyl!

Getting organized : Rosy Day Events

We all have those times where we could use a little more organization; at home, at work, getting our taxes done. You know the drill. One area where people often need a little help is organizing their wedding or other social event. I’m happy to announce that I’ll be working with Rosy Day Events who offer a wide range of services to help with planning your big day. I met up with Rachel Schachter the other day, who along with her business partner Donna Christian, helps to keep people’s events on track.

Rachel and I met up at one of the Uptown Espressos in Seattle, which was probably fortuitous, as she’d been working a wedding until 2 am that morning. We chatted for quite a while about our clients, styles, and the industry. It must have been a great conversation as my friend Joann snuck right by us and I didn’t even notice.

One of the things I really like about Rosy Day’s approach is that they are very hands on for their clients. No vendor gets a recommendation without having been vetted out, and trying their wares. Catering? They’ve tasted the food. Venue? You can be sure they’ve checked it out and met with the staff. Photography? They’ve met them, delved into their portfolios and gotten the vibe of how they interact with their clients (not to mention making sure they have backup gear. (All you wedding photographers do carry back up gear, right?)

All in all, whether you are looking for day-of planning, or a soup-to-nuts package, if you’d like a little help in the organization department, you should definitely drop these gals a line.

Here’s one of Rachel dodging the spring Seattle raindrops:

Erica and Scott’s Proposal

This was a first for me. I’ve photographed a ton of engagement sessions and weddings. But this is the first time I’ve been able to capture someone’s proposal.

The wheels were set in motion about two months ago. I got a note from Facebook from Scott, asking me to give him a call. He laid out his plan to ask Erica to marry him on their anniversary, and asked if I’d be there for some photos. Well, of course I would! The interesting part, though, was keeping this a secret from my wife. You see, Erica is one of my wife’s best friends who she’s known since college. Every time my wife brought up the subject with me, I had to just play it off. Her: “Erica is really hoping Scott proposes soon” Me: “Really? Well, I guess we’ll see. It could happen”

The kicker was when my wife walked in to my office last week and said “Erica and Scott are going to get engaged!” Me: “Yeah, I know” Her: “What!! How did you know!!??” Needless to say, I explained the whole story to her the night before the actual proposal.

The plan was to have the proposal at the Japanese gardens in the Arboretum. There were three potential hitches with this plan: 1) It would likely be raining 2) They don’t allow professional photographers and 3) Scott would need a plan to get her there.

For number 1, Scott couldn’t have picked a nicer early spring day here in Seattle. It was mild with sun, and a few sprinkles – the sprinkles, it seems, kept the crowds away. Number 2 – turns out, if you aren’t dragging 25 people from a wedding party in to the park, they are good with having photos done. As for 3, Scott devised a reason to get out of the house, and had a car service pick her up. This is where it almost fell down, as there was a stranger at the door asking her to get in to a town car. Evidently the driver was small enough that Erica felt she could “take him” if need be, and after a call to a friend (who was in on the plan, and urged her to get in the car) she was on the way to the park.

After she arrived, and made her way out to the bridge, with guidance from the park employees, Scott was able to pop the question. When He got down on one knee and asked, her response, in typical Erica fashion, was “of course.”

Congratulations guys! Thanks for letting me capture your special day!
